Frequently Asked Question: What is Growing Pains?

Growing pains are often described as an ache or throb, particularly in the legs and behind the knees, affecting 15-30% of children. The pain doesn’t present daily, instead coming and going. It typically presents in late afternoon/evening after big days of activity. Sometimes symptoms can wake a sleeping child, but come good in the morning. Children who experience growing pains are otherwise in good health and are not limited on days when the pain is not present.

Growing pain are diagnosed by exclusion of other causes of the symptoms. Whilst pain can be tricky in children, physiotherapy can support your child by accurately assessing and evaluating whether the presentation is growing pains or otherwise.

Times to present to Physio would include:

  • Persistent pain
  • Pain associated with injury
  • Limping
  • Affecting a child’s activities
